Our Funds

• General Legacy Support Fund

  Special projects will be identified on an on-going basis.

  Success stories:

  2019 – The Foundation has funded installation of new cameras & TV monitors above all the ice sheets.

  2018 – Curl Mesabi worked with Tourism Center with University of Minnesota Extension to conduct a study of the Social and Economic of Curl Mesabi and the Range Recreation Civic Center. This project was funded by the Curl Mesabi Foundation and the NE Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnership with University of Minnesota Extension.

  2018 – The Foundation sponsored a send off celebration for our US Olympic Team.

  2016 – A donation from the Virginia Foundation allowed the Curl Mesabi Foundation to purchase 50 new curling brooms to be used by new curlers at open houses and other introductory curling events.

• Rock Replacement Fund

  Our old curling stones, from the old Eveleth & Gilbert curling clubs, were about 50 years old…and needed to be replaced. The cost was right around $73,000. The Foundation created a Rock Replacement Fund and successfully funded this project.

  Success stories:

  2020-2021 – The new rocks arrived in 2020…but due to COVID-19 Curl Mesabi never opened for the season. In 2021, the first folks to curl with our brand new rocks were the competitors at the 2022 Mixed Doubles Olympic Trials…what a way to “break-in” the rocks!

  2019 – Curl Mesabi has signed a five year, interest free, loan agreement with USA Curling to purchase 130 new curling stones (8 sheets + 2 extra). Between $30,250 in the Rock Replacement Fund and selling our current rocks for about $20,000, we are well on our way with over $50,000 towards the $72,300 needed for the new stones. The new rocks will be ready for play in the 2020/2021 season.

• Junior Development Fund

  Our junior curlers are the future of our sport. Most every Sunday afternoon during the curling season you will find dedicated volunteers sharing their passion for our sport with 60-70 youth. Our young curlers range from 9 to 19 years of age; not only are they having fun, but they are learning a lifetime sport that they will be able to play well into their golden years.

  Foundation funds will: 

  1. Support school efforts to develop curling programs.
  2. Encourage junior participation in regular leagues.
  3. Support competitive player development.

  Success stories:

  2017 – Michael Mattson received financial support to participate in the Under 18 Nationals.  This is a new USCA event being held in Milwaukee March 9-12.

  2017 – Supported the Eveleth-Mountain Iron Lions Club Junior Bonspiel.

• Scholarship Fund

  Every year college / vocational scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are curlers, going to at least one girl and one boy attending college in the fall. Recipients will be chosen through a drawing.

  Success stories:

  2019 – Seven Curl Mesabi junior curlers received scholarships thanks to on the spot fundraising at the general membership meeting.

  2018 – At the spring membership meeting, there were three applicants for the scholarship. John Mayasich suggested that an additional $500 be collected on the spot, and all three applicants were awarded scholarships. THANKS everyone for your generosity!

• Nels Englund Senior Bonspiel Fund

  Our senior curlers are the legacy of our sport. The Nels Englund Bonspiel is our senior club championship, filled with years of tradition, pride and memories. This fund will assure the bonspiel will be held for many years to come.

  Success stories:

  2017 – Bill Hill, our most senior curler, has generously contributed to this fund to support the bonspiel for the next several years.
